A hardcore survival world with one rule

DayZ drops players into a post-apocalyptic world where the infected roam and other survivors can be just as dangerous. The game includes two maps: Chernarus, the original 230 km2 hand-crafted terrain based on real locations, and Livonia, a denser 163 km2 landscape of forests, swamps and hidden ruins. Both offer their own pace of danger and discovery.

Survival here means managing hunger, thirst, body temperature and injury while scavenging dead cities for gear, patching clothing, crafting improvised tools and repairing vehicles to hide away in a base. Wildlife such as wolves and bears add another layer of threat alongside the weather and the infected.

Meeting other players

Up to 60 players can share a server at once, and how they interact is entirely up to them. Voice chat lets survivors negotiate, cooperate, betray or simply avoid one another, and encounters at military bases or contested loot spots often end in sudden PvP firefights. Trust is scarce and every meeting carries risk.

Mods and the wider community

Through the Steam Workshop, players can find customised servers, install fan-made maps, weapons and features, and manage them from the game launcher. It is a straightforward way to reshape the DayZ experience beyond the base game, whether joining an established community or tweaking things solo.
