DayZ drops players into a post-apocalyptic Chernarus, a 230 square kilometre hand-crafted terrain based on real locations, where the infected roam and every other survivor is a potential threat. The included Livonia terrain adds a further 163 square kilometres of forests, swamps and abandoned hunting cabins for those who want a second, deadlier landscape to test their skills in.

Survival here means managing hunger, thirst and body temperature while scavenging for gear, patching torn clothing and crafting improvised tools. Loot runs into contaminated zones or dead cities can pay off handsomely, but only for those who come prepared with a hazard suit and gas mask.

Meeting other survivors

Up to 60 players can share a server at once, and how you deal with them is entirely up to you. Some will trade, some will build alongside you, and some will shoot on sight. Voice chat makes every encounter tense, since trust is in short supply and a single bullet can end a run instantly.

Firefights tend to erupt around hotspots such as abandoned military bases, where the stakes are highest and the loot is worth the risk. The Steam Workshop also opens the door to community servers and mods, from new maps to custom weapons, all manageable from the game launcher.
