Fallout: New Vegas drops you into the heat-blasted Mojave, from small desert towns to the neon-lit New Vegas Strip and the colossal Hoover Dam. Rival factions are fighting for control of the region, and the choices you make decide who ends up holding the cards.

Obsidian Entertainment built this follow-up to Fallout 3 around a Companion Wheel for directing allies, a Reputation System that tracks how your actions ripple through the wasteland, and Hardcore Mode for players who want the survival side of things taken seriously. Combat runs through V.A.T.S. for pausing time and targeting body parts, or in real time if you prefer to play it straight, and the weapon roster is roughly double that of Fallout 3, with a configuration system for tinkering with mods on the fly.

It sits comfortably alongside other RPG games and shares plenty of DNA with the broader action games and adventure games on offer, given how freely it mixes shooting, dialogue and exploration.
