SpongeBob and Patrick stumble into a wish-granting mess after meeting the fortune teller Kassandra and her vial of Mermaid's Tears. Their overexcited wishing tears open the fabric of space and time, spilling Cosmic Jelly across Bikini Bottom and opening portals to a set of Wishworlds that need putting right.

It falls to SpongeBob, with Balloon-Patrick along for the ride, to rescue lost friends and bring back Bikini Bottom's landmark buildings, all while Kassandra pursues her own plan with those wish-granting tears.
