Yakuza: Like a Dragon follows Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking yakuza grunt who takes the fall for a crime he didn't commit and serves eighteen years in prison, only to find his clan destroyed and his loyalty betrayed when he gets out. He gathers a ragtag crew, a rogue cop, a homeless ex-nurse and a hostess with her own agenda, to uncover the truth and take his life back on the streets of Yokohama.

The game trades the series' usual brawling for dynamic RPG combat. Ichiban and his allies switch between nineteen Jobs, from Bodyguard to Musician, turning bats, bikes, umbrellas and whatever else is lying around into weapons. Away from the fighting there's an arcade full of classic SEGA games, go-kart racing around the city and fifty substories to work through, alongside the ordinary business of taking in a modern Japanese city.
