DayZ drops players into a post-apocalyptic world where the infected, wildlife and other survivors are all threats. The rule is simple: stay alive, however you can. The game includes two maps, the 230 square kilometre Chernarus, DayZ's original hand-crafted terrain based on real locations, and the 163 square kilometre Livonia, a denser, wilder landscape of forests, swamps and hidden underground complexes.

Up to 60 players can occupy a server at once, meeting as allies, rivals or something in between. Survival mechanics cover hunger, thirst, body temperature and gear condition, so scavenging cities, patching clothing and fixing vehicles all matter as much as combat. Firefights break out especially around hotspots like abandoned military bases, and a single bullet can end a run instantly.

Steam Workshop support means the game can be extended with fan-made maps, guns and features, managed through the game launcher for those who want to tailor their server experience.
