About Firefly Studios
Firefly Studios, based in the United Kingdom, makes real time strategy games built around castles: raising walls, feeding a population, keeping the peasants content and then defending or breaking a fortress. Stronghold is its signature series, and the games sit somewhere between war game and settlement simulation, which is why the range spans both strategy and simulation tastes.
Alongside the historical English setting of the original games, the series moves to the crusades and to medieval Asia, while Stronghold Kingdoms takes the formula into a persistent online kingdom.
Firefly Studios games in the catalogue
The Stronghold line is represented across its generations, from Stronghold HD and Stronghold: Definitive Edition through Stronghold 2, Stronghold Crusader 2 and Stronghold Warlords, plus Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition. Bundles gather several entries at once, including the Stronghold HD + Stronghold Crusader HD Pack, The Stronghold Collection and the Stronghold Complete Franchise Pack, while the Stronghold Kingdoms Starter Pack covers the free to play online game.
Add on content is part of the range too, such as The Mongol Empire Campaign for Stronghold Warlords, so it is worth checking that you own the matching base game before adding expansions. Titles span releases from 2001 to 2025 and are for PC.
Buying and activating
Almost everything is a Steam code redeemed on your own Steam account, and the library entry appears once redemption finishes; the help centre explains how to activate a Steam key. The Stronghold Kingdoms Starter Pack is redeemed through the publisher's own website rather than Steam. Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is also offered as an account, which comes with the game already on it and is signed into instead of redeemed, and as a gift delivery.
Games are sold per region, and a code must match the region of the account it is being added to, so check the region of a listing against your account before buying; there is a guide on region locking if you are unsure.
Common questions
- Which platform do these games activate on?
- Nearly all of them activate on Steam for PC. The Stronghold Kingdoms Starter Pack is the exception and is redeemed on the publisher's own website.
- Will a key work in another country?
- Only if the region of the key matches the region of the account redeeming it. A key intended for one region may be refused on an account registered elsewhere.
- What is the difference between a key and an account?
- A key is a code you redeem to add the game to your own library. An account arrives with the game already on it, so you sign in with the details provided instead of redeeming anything.
- Do I need the base game for DLC?
- Yes. Add on campaigns such as The Mongol Empire Campaign require the matching base game, in that case Stronghold Warlords, on the same account.
- When do I receive my key or account details?
- The key or account details are delivered to your order once payment has completed.
