A Windows product key activates your copy of Microsoft Windows, removing the “Activate Windows” watermark and unlocking all features. Here is how to activate yours.
Before You Start
- Windows installed on your PC
- Your product key (25 characters in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX)
- Make sure the key matches your Windows edition (Home, Pro, Enterprise, etc.)
Method 1: Via Settings (Windows 10/11)
- Open Settings (Windows key + I).
- Go to System and then “Activation”.
- Click “Change product key” or “Change” next to your current activation status.
- Enter your 25-character product key.
- Click “Next” and then “Activate”.
- Windows will verify the key online and activate your copy.
Method 2: During Windows Installation
- When installing Windows, you will be prompted to enter a product key.
- Enter your key at the prompt and click “Next”.
- If you skip this step, you can activate later using Method 1.
Method 3: Via Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
- Type
slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX(replace with your actual key) and press Enter. - Then type
slmgr /atoand press Enter to activate online.
Tips
- If activation fails, make sure your PC has an internet connection and that the key has not been used on another device.
- Windows Home keys will not work on Windows Pro, and vice versa.
- Digital licenses are tied to your hardware. If you change major hardware (like your motherboard), you may need to reactivate.
