How to Enable Steam Guard on Your Steam Account

Steam Guard is Steam’s two-factor authentication (2FA) system. It adds an extra layer of security to your account by requiring a special code each time you log in from a new device.

Option 1: Steam Guard via Email (Basic)

  • Open Steam and go to Steam → Settings → Account.
  • Click “Manage Steam Guard Account Security”.
  • Select “Get Steam Guard codes by email”.
  • When you log in from a new device, Steam will email you a code. Enter it to continue.

Option 2: Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator (Recommended)

  • Download the Steam Mobile App on your phone (iOS or Android).
  • Sign in to the app with your Steam credentials.
  • Tap the menu icon and go to Steam Guard.
  • Tap “Add Authenticator”.
  • A verification code will be sent to your email. Enter it.
  • You’ll receive a recovery code — save this somewhere safe. You’ll need it if you lose your phone.
  • The app will now generate time-based codes. You’ll enter these whenever you log in from a new device.

Why enable Steam Guard?

  • Protects your account from unauthorized logins.
  • Required to trade items on the Steam marketplace without a 15-day hold.
  • Required to use the Steam Community Market without trade restrictions.
  • Adds a 7-day cooldown on any further changes once enabled, preventing quick account theft.

Tips

  • Always save your recovery code in a safe place.
  • If you switch phones, remove the authenticator from the old phone first, or use the recovery code to transfer it.
  • Steam Guard via the mobile authenticator is significantly more secure than email codes.
