About Red Barrels
Based in Montreal, Red Barrels works almost entirely in horror. The studio made its name with Outlast, a first-person game of asylum corridors and limited batteries, then followed it with Outlast 2 and the multiplayer-minded The Outlast Trials, all built around vulnerability instead of combat.
Its games sit across the adventure, action, indie, horror, survival and first-person shooter tags, which is why they turn up alongside other story-led adventure games as well as pure horror shelves.
Red Barrels games in the catalogue
The core trio is here: Outlast, Outlast 2 and The Outlast Trials, with release years spanning 2013 to 2024. Outlast and Outlast 2 come as PC editions for Steam and GOG.com, while The Outlast Trials is the broadest entry, covering Steam, Epic Games, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Collected editions and content packs make up a large part of the listings. Outlast Trinity, the Outlast and Outlast 2 bundle and the Outlast Franchise Bundle gather the series into single purchases, while The Outlast Trials has the Unholy Night Pack and the Reagent Starter Pack, including a Reagent Starter Pack edition. Add-ons attach to the base game, so that has to be owned on the same account. PC buyers will find most of these among Steam keys for PC, and the console side runs through Xbox codes and PlayStation editions.
How buying works
Each listing activates on the platform named in it: Steam or GOG.com and Epic Games for PC, the Microsoft Store for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation Store for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Keys are redeemed on your own account, and the help centre walks through activating a Steam key and redeeming an Xbox code.
Some titles, including The Outlast Trials and Outlast: Bundle of Terror, are also sold as game accounts, which arrive with the game already on it and are signed into rather than redeemed. Games are sold per region, and a key has to match the region of the account it is being activated on, so check the region of a listing against your store account before buying.
Common questions
- Which platform does a Red Barrels game activate on?
- It depends on the edition you pick. Outlast and Outlast 2 activate on Steam or GOG.com, while The Outlast Trials editions cover Steam, Epic Games, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
- Will a key work in another country?
- Only if the key and the account match in region. A key made for one region will not redeem on an account registered elsewhere, so compare the two before ordering.
- What is the difference between a key and an account?
- A key is a code you redeem on your own store account so the game is added to your library. An account comes with the game already on it and you sign in with the details provided instead of redeeming anything.
- Do the Outlast Trials packs need the base game?
- Yes. The Unholy Night Pack and the Reagent Starter Pack are add-on content and require The Outlast Trials on the same account and platform.
- How do I receive my key or account details?
- The key or account details are delivered to your order once payment completes.
